What is the Windows Registry?

The Windows Registry is the place where all your configuration settings are stored. The Windows Registry is huge because every setting from the background of your desktop all the way to what programs load when your computer starts are stored there. The registry accounts for it all. Every time you install a new program it makes changes to your Windows registry. Even settings for your hardware are stored in the registry. The longer you have your computer the more errors seem to find their way into your registry, along with useless information and unnecessary configuration settings that tend to bog your system down. These things can reek havoc on your system.

Not all programs are responsible and undo the settings and keys they change and create. Because of the size of your registry it is nearly impossible to find and eliminate all these items by by hand. This is one of the reasons why you need a Registry Repair tool.

The Windows Registry's Structure

The windows registry is divided into 7 hives but not all of them are visible through the registry editor so to keep it simple we are just going to say 5. Let me name each hive and give a rough idea of what sort of data it stores.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT AKA:HKCR:This is where application data is stored and well as file associations. This is how windows knows what application to open when you click on a file.HKEY_CURRENT_USER AKA:HKCU: Yep you guess it!! This is where all the settings are stored for the current logged on user.

HKU, HKEY_USERS: contains sub keys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each user profile actively loaded on the machine, though user hives are usually only loaded for currently logged-in users.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG:contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at the boot time.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE AKA:HKLM: This is where all the settings are stored for the local computer. Settings related to how windows communicates with your hardware are stored here. Every piece of software installed on your computer has a key here including Windows it self. This is where Windows is told what to run at startup. Your Internet Explorer settings are stored here as well. This is the hive I used to spend the most time going through because it is in this key where most of your problems will arise but unless you know what your doing don't go combing through this hive and delete keys because it could lead you straight to a reinstallation of your Windows Operating System.
